The Israeli military occupation of the West Bank is only one facet of the deeply nuanced and historical conflict between Israel and Palestine; however, it is such an integral part of Israel-Palestine relations that I felt compelled to learn more about the reality of the occupation. In June of 2022, I spent a few weeks in Jerusalem and the West Bank, connecting with and hearing from Palestinian grassroots activists, Israeli politicians, religious leaders, spokespersons of the Palestinian Authority, expert academics, and political prisoners. Through these conversations and with the support of the Mandel-Palagye Program for Middle East Peace at Tulane University, I conducted fully-funded and specific research on Israel’s use of cyber tools in its occupation of the West Bank. What I learned was shocking and something that I want to share with others.
Beyond this specific topic, I gained insight into other aspects of the conflict, such as the role of third-parties (from Lebanon to the United States), dialogues between Palestinians and Israeli settlers, the Druze perspective, the demographics of Palestinians in the various territories, and the Israeli military presence in the West Bank through the eyes of the youth.
Sundown in Jerusalem features multi-media work pulled from my travels through these contested territories and from these dialogues that I took part in. From exclusive interviews to scanned notes, an academic research paper to film photos, this project will show you a glimpse of the reality of the occupation.
